The Alcohol and Impotency Myth

Published by at 1:41 pm under health

This is a guest post from a Blogger friend that brought the subject to my attention.  I thought that you readers of NYuncorked just might find it of interest.

It has long been assumed that alcohol consumption contributes to erectile dysfunction.  But a new study in the January issue of the International Society for Sexual Medicine dispels that notion.

Researchers in Australia asked nearly 1600 men between the ages of 20 and 80 about their health and behavior, including their consumption of a standard drink of alcohol.

A standard drink was defined as a 3 to 4 ounce glass of wine, 12 ounces of beer, and one ounce of hard liquor or spirits.

The study concluded that when other factors like smoking and heart disease were considered, men who drank up to four standard drinks per day for no more than five days per week were 30 percent less likely to report erectile dysfunction.

Doctors are not suggesting that men take up drinking as a cure for their impotency, and they say more research is needed, but this latest study should reduce fears that the long-standing opinion that alcohol consumption makes erectile dysfunction worse is apparently flawed.
