How to Tell when the Chardonnay Grape is Ready to Crush

The sugar content is crucial in determining when is the exact time to harvest grapes for crushing.

This video by Brian Freedman of ClassicWines dot com is an interview with Louisa Hargreave, Director of Stony Brook University Center for Wine, Food and Culture, and takes place at Bedell Cellars winery on Long Island.

As ms. Hargreave describes the internal content of the grape and its juices you will automatically start to salivate. The wine making business is alive and well in New York State and we appreciate such knowledgeable input from experts.

Day Trip of a Central New York Wine Lover

As an avid wine lover, one of my favorite things to do-other than relaxing at home with a finely crafted glass of wine-is to visit local wineries and see how it’s all done. To me, it’s a fascinating craft. From the hard work that goes into cultivating the grapes, to the know-how that it takes to turn that crop into a success story. Luckily, living here in Syracuse, we have more than just a handful of Central New York wineries well within driving distance.

An Increasingly Acquired Taste – New York State Wines – A Guest Post

Guest post by Rob Privitere-Coats.

I see California, I see France … In terms of wine, New York is no longer underpants!

New York State wines are slowly working their way into the cellars of connoisseurs throughout the country. New York State offers a wide variety of wines, catering to all palates.

In the past, the State of New York has hamstrung its wine producers with unnecessary restrictions on sales. In May, the Supreme Court ruled that New York’s restrictions on internet sales and the sale of New York wines in other states were unconstitutional, thus paving the way for record sales for New York State vintners. Not that they needed a lot of help.

Borghese Winery North Fork Long Island

Castello di Borghese, or the Castle of the Borgheses, is now a vineyard at North Fork Long Island that is steeped in a tradition of family wine making back into 9th century Italy.

Castello di Borghese is the oldest winery on Long Island and it is close enough to the metropolis that you will want to take a day trip there when you get a break in your busy schedule.

I can’t think of any better way to spend an afternoon. Visit the website for directions and a schedule of tour times at castellodiborghese.com.

Ice Wine of the Finger Lakes

The term Ice Wine refers to a special type of desert wine that is made after selected grapes have been allowed to ripen fully and then to freeze on the vine. The sugars are concentrated and some rich flavors and tastes abound in the Ice Wine of the Finger Lakes.

From another Internet resource: “Ice wine (or icewine, as one word, or in German, Eiswein) is a type of dessert wine produced from grapes that have been frozen while still on the vine.

New York Uncorked Trips Down Memory Lane

Yesterday I was on a business trip that took me out through many of the Finger Lakes Winery areas. Unfortunately it was not possible to stop and visit with our old friends because this was on a different matter and I did not have time to do anything for NYuncorked (dot com).

I was able to reflect on some of my years of travel and work throughout that region and the fine people with a strong work ethic that live there. Back in the late 1960′s and through the 70′s and 80′s I witnessed a transformation in the grape growing business and the expansion of many of the excellent wineries that you appreciate so much today.
